Sohum Horse Gram Flour 250Gm is ground horse gram, called kulith in Marathi and huruli in Kannada. It is one of the oldest pulses on the subcontinent and one of the least known outside it.

The flour goes into kulith pithla, a thick savoury porridge eaten with bhakri, and into the thin peppery saar drunk alongside rice in the Konkan. It has a distinct earthy, almost smoky taste that besan does not, which is why recipes that call for it mean it specifically.

Can I use besan instead? You can make something, but it will not be the same dish. Horse gram is markedly earthier and slightly bitter where besan is sweet and nutty. A kulith pithla made with besan is simply a besan pithla.

Is 250 grams a small pack? It is the right size for this flour, because it is used a few spoons at a time in specific dishes rather than daily. A larger bag would go stale long before a normal household reached the bottom.
