Sohum Metkut 100Gm is a fine powder of roasted dals ground with turmeric, asafoetida and a few other spices. The name comes from me for methi and kut for pounded, and the whole thing exists to be stirred into rice.
A spoon of metkut with hot rice and a spoon of ghee is the plainest comfort food in a Marathi household, the thing eaten when nothing else has been cooked, when someone is unwell, or as the first course of a meal. It is also dusted over plain dahi rice and used to season a simple bhaji.
What do you actually do with metkut? Mix a teaspoon into a small mound of hot rice with ghee and eat it as it is. That is the whole dish. Some households also stir it into curd rice or sprinkle it over steamed vegetables.
Is it very spicy? No. Metkut is savoury and slightly bitter from the methi rather than hot. The heat in a Maharashtrian meal comes from elsewhere; this is closer to a seasoning powder than to a chutney.
