Description
Lakshmi Manathakkali Vathal are black nightshade berries brined and sun-dried the traditional Tamil way. Bitter-savoury and intensely moreish once fried, they are the vathal most requested for old-style kuzhambu.
Fry a handful in ghee till they darken and crackle, then simmer them into tangy vathal kuzhambu, or serve the fried berries as-is beside curd rice, where their salty bitterness cuts the cream. Kept away from moisture, they last a year.
