Annam Upma Rava 1 KG is semolina milled at the medium grade that upma wants, and sold roasted rather than raw. The roasting is what stops the finished upma turning into porridge.
Upma is the fastest hot breakfast in a South Indian kitchen, mustard seeds and curry leaves in ghee, onion and green chilli, then the rava and water. Getting it right comes down to two things, roasted rava and the water ratio, and buying it pre roasted removes half the risk.
Is this already roasted? Yes, which is what upma rava means on a pack. You can give it two minutes in a dry pan to freshen it if it has been open a while, but it does not need the full roasting that raw rava does.
What water ratio should I use? Between two and two and a half parts water to one part rava by volume, added boiling. Two gives a firm upma you can shape, two and a half a softer one. Add the water to the rava, never the other way round, and stir as it goes in.
