AIVA UPMA RAVA 1 KG
Description
Aiva Upma Rava 1 KG is the second of the two upma ravas the shop keeps. The difference between it and the Annam pack is grade and mill rather than anything printed on either label.
Rava grades vary more between mills than people expect, and a slightly coarser grain gives a grainier upma that holds its shape while a finer one goes creamy. Nobody prints a grade number, so the only way to find the one your family likes is to buy a kilo of each and see.
Why buy this rather than the other upma rava? Because rava grades differ between mills and the one you grew up on is the one that tastes right. If your upma has been coming out softer or grainier than you want, switching brand is the cheapest thing to try.
Can I use upma rava for halwa? You can, and sooji halwa made with it works, though it will be a touch grainier than halwa made with fine rava. What you cannot do is go the other way and make good upma from very fine sooji.
The other brand on the shelf, Annam upma rava, is worth comparing, and the rest of the rava shelf holds the idly, samba and Bombay ravas. Vegetarian. Keep it sealed and dry, and look through the pack before you use it, because rava draws weevils faster than flour does.
