Tasty Nibbles Malabar Tamarind 100G is kudampuli, also called kokum or gambooge, which is a completely different fruit from ordinary tamarind despite the shared name. The rind is dried and smoked until it is nearly black.
Kudampuli is used almost exclusively in Kerala fish curry, where two or three pieces sour the whole pot and add a distinct smokiness. It is not interchangeable with tamarind, and using it elsewhere will surprise people.
