Elaichi chai, cardamom on its own without the rest of the masala, is its own tradition rather than a stripped down version of one. Across much of north India and Pakistan a cracked green pod in the pan is the only spice that goes in, and the resulting cup is floral and sweet rather than warm and peppery.
Three heaped teaspoons to a mug of hot water and a firm stir. Against the masala tub the difference is immediate: no clove heat, no ginger bite, just the perfumed note cardamom gives. It is the easier of the two to drink several cups of in a day, and the one that suits people who find full masala chai too assertive in the afternoon.
How is this different from the masala tub? Cardamom only, where the masala tub also carries ginger, clove and cinnamon. Lighter and more floral, with none of the warm heat.
Is it very sweet? Yes, sugar is blended in at Gulf chai levels. The unsweetened cardamom tub on the same shelf is the alternative if that is too much.
