Harad is the dried fruit of the myrobalan tree and one of the three fruits in triphala, the classical Ayurvedic combination. It has been traded across the subcontinent for a very long time and appears under several names, which is why the shop’s own listing spells it harad while the web address for this page spells it harar.
The taste is astringent first and bitter second, the sort of dryness that tannin gives rather than the sharpness of a chilli, and it is not a flavour that improves a dish by accident.
